How This Calculator Works
Unlike this site’s roof, gutter, metal roof, and siding calculators, this one doesn’t price by area. Windows are priced and sold per unit, so this calculator prices per window instead: it starts with a base installed cost for your chosen window type, multiplies that by a frame-material multiplier and a glass-package multiplier, then adds labor that scales with how many stories the window sits on and whether the job is an insert or a full-frame replacement. That per-window figure is rounded to the nearest whole dollar before being multiplied by your window count, so the “Cost per Window” line item you see always multiplies out exactly to the subtotal below it, no rounding surprises if you check the math by hand.
Frame material and glass package are both expressed as multipliers on the base cost rather than flat add-ons, since a premium frame or glass upgrade costs proportionally more on a larger, pricier window type than on a small one. Labor is different: it’s a flat per-window figure that scales with story count (ladder work and staging cost more the higher you go) and jumps by a fixed surcharge for full-frame installs, which take significantly longer than an insert that reuses the existing frame. Once a project reaches8 or more windows, the whole subtotal gets a15% discount, reflecting the efficiency of one mobilization instead of several smaller jobs.

Every number on this page links to where it came from. Base costs blend two sources; every multiplier, the labor figures, and the multi-window discount come from one source’s explicitly published formula. Figures verified July 2026.

Bay/bow is priced as one complete multi-panel unit from constructlytools.com’s complete-unit range of $1,200–4,500 (midpoint $2,850), not blended with This Old House, whose figure prices a single panel rather than a full bay/bow assembly. Those are different quantities, and averaging them would compare a whole structure against one of its parts, so bay/bow stays single-sourced to the figure that matches what this calculator actually prices: a full unit.

Why Egress Windows Are Omitted
Egress windows are code-required emergency-exit windows, common in basements and below-grade bedrooms. They’re left off this calculator’s type list because only constructlytools.com publishes a figure for them, and egress installs frequently require structural well or excavation work that neither source prices as part of a like-for-like window swap. A single-sourced figure that also doesn’t price the structural work most egress jobs actually need would be misleading rather than useful, so egress is omitted until a second corroborating source is found.

What Drives Window Replacement Cost
Window type sets the base price before any multiplier is applied. A picture window, a fixed pane with no moving parts, is the cheapest type here; a bay or bow window, a full multi-panel assembly that projects out from the wall, costs the most by a wide margin because it’s several windows’ worth of material and structural framing in one unit. Frame material and glass package both scale with the base price: upgrading either on a bay/bow window adds far more in dollar terms than the same upgrade on a picture window, because both are multipliers, not flat add-ons.
Install method matters most when the existing frame is compromised: rot, water damage, or a resize all push a job from insert to full-frame, which costs more in labor because the crew is removing and replacing the frame itself, not just swapping the sash and glass inside an intact frame. Story count adds labor cost the same way it does across this site’s other calculators: higher stories need more staging and more careful, slower work. Project size is the one lever that reduces price here: once you cross 8 windows, the whole project gets cheaper per window, which is worth keeping in mind if you’re deciding whether to replace a few windows now and the rest later, or all of them in one project.
Worked Example
Take this calculator’s own default scenario: 10 vinyl double-hung windows, insert install, single story, double-pane Low-E glass. Base cost is $500 per window; vinyl carries no frame multiplier (1.00x) and double-pane Low-E carries a 1.15x glass multiplier, so material and glass come to $500 × 1.00 × 1.15 = $575. Add insert labor at $150 per window (single-story, so no story multiplier premium) and you get $725 per window. Multiply by 10 windows and the subtotal is $7,250. Because 10 windows clears the 8-window threshold, a 15% whole-house discount applies, bringing the total to $6,163. Apply the Low/High spread (0.85x to 1.15x, the same symmetric band used across this site’s calculators) and you get a Low estimate of $5,239 and a High estimate of$7,087.
