How This Calculator Works
This calculator prices gutter installation the way a contractor quotes it: a per-linear-foot rate for your chosen material, multiplied by your gutter run, plus a flat surcharge if the work is happening on a second story. Enter your gutter run directly if you know it from a measurement or an old quote. If you don’t, switch to “Estimate from roof/home area” and enter your home’s roof or footprint square footage instead; the calculator divides that figure by 10 to approximate your linear footage, a rule of thumb both of this page’s rate sources publish independently. A 1,600 sq ft home, for example, resolves to roughly 160 linear feet of gutter, which is why that scenario is this calculator’s default.
Material selection moves the price more than anything else: vinyl is cheapest, aluminum is the most common middle-ground choice, steel costs more, and copper sits at the premium end. Every material’s per-linear-foot rate already bundles downspouts, end caps, hangers, and installation labor into one number, so this calculator never adds a separate downspout line item; doing so would double-count a cost the base rate already covers. A second story adds its own flat per-linear-foot labor surcharge on top of the material cost, reflecting the extra ladder work, staging, and time a crew needs working off the ground. That surcharge never scales with your material choice: it’s the same dollar amount whether you pick vinyl or copper, because it prices the difficulty of the work, not the material running through it.

2-Story Labor Surcharge
Two sources independently state the same range for second-story gutter work:homeguide.com states “+$1 to $3+/LF,” andbigriverroofs.com states it “adds $1 to $3 per linear foot.” This calculator uses the midpoint of that shared range, $2/LF, applied only to material cost, not stacked with any other multiplier. Both sources checked 2026-07-17.
Square Footage to Linear Feet
Both rate sources above independently state the same rule of thumb for estimating gutter footage from a home’s roof or footprint square footage: divide by 10. This calculator uses that conversion whenever you estimate from area instead of entering a measured linear-foot figure directly.

What Drives Gutter Installation Cost
Material is the single biggest lever. Vinyl stays the cheapest option per linear foot, aluminum is the default choice for most homes on cost and durability, steel costs noticeably more, and copper, prized for its look and lifespan, runs roughly three times aluminum’s installed price on an identical run.
Home height matters because second-story work is slower and requires more safety setup: taller ladders, more careful staging, and more time per linear foot than ground-level, single-story runs. Gutter length scales the whole bill linearly, which is why an accurate linear-foot count, or a reasonable roof-area estimate, matters more for gutters than for almost any other exterior project: there’s no material-quantity math to correct for beyond the length itself.
Rooflines with more corners, valleys, or dormers need more linear feet of gutter than a simple rectangular footprint of the same square footage, since each inside or outside corner adds length the sqft÷10 rule of thumb doesn’t fully capture. If your home has an unusually complex roofline, measure your actual gutter run directly rather than relying on the area-based estimate.
Worked Example
Take this calculator’s own default scenario: a 160-linear-foot gutter run on a single-story home, aluminum, entered directly. That’s 160 LF at $16 per linear foot, or $2,560, with no 2-story surcharge since the home is a single story. Apply the Low/High spread (0.85x to 1.15x, the same symmetric band used across this site’s calculators) and you get a Low estimate of $2,176, a High estimate of $2,944, and a $2,560 midpoint to budget around. Switch that same home to steel and the subtotal jumps to $3,200. Move it to a two-story home and aluminum’s subtotal rises by $320, the same 160 LF multiplied by the $2/LF surcharge, regardless of material. Try it above with your own gutter length.
